In the past week, there have been 24 shootings and five deaths in Chicago. One of the most recent victims was a five-month-old girl, who was shot in the backseat of her car in the South Shore. According to Chicago Police Supt. David Brown, the weekend was “particularly violent.”
In addition to the fatality, seven others were wounded in shooting incidents. The shootings took place over the long holiday weekend and in different locations across the city. Several of the shootings happened in the notoriously violent West Side. One shooting, at an early morning train station in Chicago, left a 30-year-old man dead and another five people injured. Police said they did not have any suspects in custody at this time.
One person was shot multiple times and pronounced dead on Sunday night. Another victim was shot multiple times and is in critical condition. She was standing in a vacant lot when the offender opened fire. The victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen. He was not cooperating with the police.
Another incident happened on the Near North Side. Chicago police on foot patrol heard gunshots and rushed two women to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The women were taken to the hospital in good condition. The suspect was caught after a short police chase. A weapon was recovered from him. The incident remains under investigation, and no charges have been filed yet.
