Her Conviction

The case against Janet Strickland is an unusually high profile one for a woman in Illinois. The triple murder case lasted nearly three decades, and the prosecution tried to pin the conviction on her. But a new law has made the case much more difficult to challenge. The state’s attorney general, Eric Schmitt, has publicly criticized the prosecution for not acting in a timely manner.

According to the prosecution, Janet Strickland encouraged her 23-year-old grandson to shoot her husband six times in the back. William Strickland, the deceased husband of almost 30 years, was walking outside when he was shot. William Strickland died at the scene. Janet Strickland later purchased a new car for her grandson and went shopping for furniture. She later confessed to the crime, and her conviction sparked public outrage.

In the meantime, Missouri Gov. Mike Parson has refused to pardon Strickland and instead pardoned a couple of white men who brandished guns at protesters during the June 2020 election. The Missouri prosecutor’s office has argued that Strickland didn’t commit the crime. However, he has refused to grant clemency to Strickland, and his refusal to pardon them led to backlash.

Douglas’s conviction was based on a flawed identification of Strickland. The court found that Strickland had acted with malicious intent and had intended to kill her husband. However, the grandsons had used money from their grandfather’s wallet to purchase a new phone, gym shoes, and tattoos. They also blew through their grandfather’s bank account to buy a new car, gym shoes, and a new phone.

Her Appeal

The workers’ compensation case of Janet Strickland in Montana is currently before the Fourth Circuit. Janet Strickland was injured at work in May of 2011 and filed a workers’ compensation appeal. She sought compensation from the State Compensation Mutual Insurance Fund. However, the court denied her claim on the basis that she was not acting in the scope of her employment when she fell. The appeals court ruled in her favor and a new trial has been scheduled.

A Chicago woman charged with murder allegedly let her grandson take her husband’s gun and use his car before killing him. The grandson, William Strickland, shot the elderly man six times in the back as he emerged from the south side of the city. During the trial, Janet Strickland did not appear in court because of her lung disease, but she later went shopping and bought her grandson a new car.

In the post-trial hearing, the defendant argues that the defense attorney’s concession was inappropriate. She acknowledges that the argument was not included in the post-trial motion, but she is attempting to raise the issue as an ineffective assistance of counsel claim. To succeed on this claim, Strickland must show that the attorney’s performance lowered the standard of reasonableness and prejudiced her defense.

The Workers’ Compensation Court found that the case was not fair and that the court did not properly consider the evidence. The evidence presented by the defendant’s witnesses included a call to Janet’s mother, Lesley, around 3 a.m. on March 2, 2013. Lesley, the defendant’s mother, drove from Milwaukee to Chicago that same morning. The call from Janet was a disturbing one because she appeared to be drunk and was not crying.
