Another notable alumna of Howard University, Lucy Diggs Slowe, studied physiology and neurobiology. In 1917, she became the first African American to win a national championship in any sport. In addition to being an inspiring role model, Lucy Diggs Slowe, a former student at Howard University, went on to be the first black female head coach at the university. During her time there, she excelled at tennis and won the first women’s national tennis championship.

Marcus English Coleman
The White House appointed Marcus E. Coleman to lead the Center for Faith-Based Neighborhood Partnerships within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This position aligns with the DHS’s mission to strengthen partnerships between government and faith-based organizations and furthers her work to support and strengthen equitable emergency management. With a background in emergency management and faith-based communities, Coleman is ideally suited for this position. She has a deep understanding of the issues that affect faith-based communities.
A senior associate at HWC Inc., Marcus has extensive experience in disaster risk reduction and community-based resilience building. He has worked on numerous projects promoting both individual and community-based actions to reduce risks. Prior to becoming the director of the Center, Marcus served as an Assistant Director at the DHS Center. During this time, he developed partnerships with organizations and engaged more than 50,000 leaders from multiple sectors. He is an author of the Engaging Faith-Based and Community Organizations guide and co-authored FEMA’s Religious and Cultural Literacy course and IS-909: Community Preparedness: Implementing Simple Activities For Everyone. He also led an initiative to improve house of worship security nationwide. During his tenure, Presidents Biden and Obama re-established the Office of Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships.
During his tenure at the MSU College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Coleman focused on institutional and faculty relations with minority-serving institutions, and graduate student recruitment. In addition, he collaborated with the Departments of Agriculture, Food and Resource Economics, and Food Science and Human Nutrition to promote the equitable access of nutrient-rich foods and produce in urban food deserts. In addition to working in the College of Agriculture, Coleman also served as a member of the Wallace Center at Winrock International, as well as the SERA-47 local and regional food system collaborative.
Marcus English Coleman is a soil scientist
The professional career of Marcus English Coleman spanned 12 years in higher education. He serves as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Tulane University and teaches leadership and strategy courses. Previously, Coleman served as Program Director of Grow Louisiana Beginning Farmer Training Program at Louisiana State University Agricultural Center. In this role, he aimed to empower and train a statewide network of small-scale specialty crop farmers to become more successful in their agricultural businesses. His research interests include the development of farmer-to-farmer learning, entrepreneurship, and equity.
Coleman studied at the University of Missouri before transferring to the USDA. He became a soil scientist in 1909 and was the first director of the Dokuchaev Soil Science Institute. He believed that soil is more than just soil and sought to translate Glinka’s perspective into English. In the process, Coleman helped to make soil science accessible to all. He is an active member of the National Preparedness Leadership Initiative.
The Russian pedological theory inspired changes in soil study in the US. In addition to pedology, Coleman’s work on soil biology and its role in human life has influenced the way soil is classified. In addition, many of his concepts are derived from individuals who weren’t identified as soil scientists. Soil science is a field of study that has become an important resource for mankind. And it is important to understand and respect soil because it is the basis of our existence.

As a professional wetland scientist, Coleman has extensive experience in higher education. As a licensed soil and wetland scientist with over 12 years of experience, Amber Smith assists Stantec clients with watershed planning and restoration projects, stream restoration, and environmental permitting. Amber has extensive experience monitoring stream restoration projects in eastern North Carolina. She enjoys watching restoration sites flourish.
