Is Putin Threatening Nuclear War With Ukraine?

With the war raging in the Ukraine, some have wondered: Is Putin threatening nuclear war? While a nuclear war can only be started by the Russian president, his words and actions have created a dangerous precedent for the world. But should we be concerned? There are many reasons for this concern. First, Putin has made many explicit and implicit threats against the United States and other western countries. Second, his statements have a political purpose. They help Putin justify the high costs of sanctions on Russia and they intimidate western citizens.

Third, it is possible that Putin is using the nuclear scare to influence Western policy. The timing of this threat is not accidental – it is deliberate. It is intended to send a message to the West that he means business and will win the war, regardless of the human cost. It is important to note that this approach does not fit the US or the West. During the Cuban missile crisis, both the United States and the Soviet Union avoided the use of nuclear threats. They did not use such threats during the Vietnam war, nor did France, United Kingdom, or US.

Second, Putin’s threats have not stopped the NATO alliance from interfering in the Ukraine. The Russian leader took Crimea and allowed a war to simmer in Donbas. Now, he is threatening nuclear war with Ukraine. In addition, Putin has not deterred Washington from interfering, and many NATO nations have already interfered in Moscow’s overthrow of Zelensky. If we are hesitant, we should continue to monitor the situation and make appropriate responses.
