A news filler is a piece of non-substantial copy published in newspapers. It usually consists of no-title, no-author copy and is used to fill blank space. For example, the March 5, 1963 edition of the Eagle-Gazette published three fillers: the upper right-hand fragment was an article congratulating a young man on making dean’s list, while the article fragment to the left was a news report on the death of a local high school student.
